Rim settings are little circular windows with 4 legs. The rhinestone sit's in the window, and the legs (prongs) are folded over on the backside of the fabric.
Rim settings not only frame the rhinestone for style, but it also is the safest way to attach rhinestones to a garment. Ice skaters are required to only use rim setts, so that there is little chance of the stone falling off onto the ice and injuring themselves or other skaters.
Rim sets prevent snagging on fabrics but also have a dis-advantage because they tend to cover a small portion of the stone.
